Lakeview Spring Trip 2007

On May 1- 4, 2007 Lakeview took 7 vans full of excited clients to visit Natural Bridges National Monument, Monument Valley, and Newspaper Rock.  Prior to leaving, the clients set goals and worked hard to strengthen their skills and level of functioning in various areas including: budgeting, stress management, medication management, social interaction, communication, and daily living.  It is great to see the clients’ excitement, energy, and progress before, during, and after the trip.

The following are some of our trip highlights:

Lakeview was pleased to do a service project during the trip.  In cooperation with the Travel Council and Department of Transportation, we cleaned and picked up trash along highways running in between the towns of Bullfrog and Ticaboo, near Lake Powell.  According to many of the clients, this was one of the outstanding highlights of the trip.  Many reported how great they felt to give back to the community that helped provide a wonderful experience for us.

We enjoyed museums at Monument Valley, the John Wesley Powell museum, and especially enjoyed the Edge of the Cedars state park museum, which features a prehistoric puebloan village and the largest display of prehistoric Anasazi pottery.

Clients thoroughly enjoyed the public transportation ferry ride from Hall’s Crossing to Bullfrog on Lake Powell.  It was a thrill to see such great joy on many faces during this excursion.

The following are some client successes, which we believe are indicative of the many successes that resulted from the Lakeview trip. We hope it is evident through these quotes that the trip helps change lives and provides opportunities for growth, recovery, and success.

“This trip helped me overcome some fears of mine. I learned that I didn’t need to be scared and that we can overcome hard things.”

“This trip made me feel like I could reach my goals. It gave me confidence in my skills and abilities to spend several days out of my comfort zone. I’m proud of myself and I think this trip has helped me grow in many ways. Thank you.”

“I loved the trip. It helped take my mind off of me and on to something else.”

“Before the trip I felt nervous and paranoid most of the time. Being on the trip has helped soothe my soul to be out in nature and to travel with a group. Before the trip, I wasn’t doing very well. I appreciate that the staff accept me and encourage me. I now want to be a better person and try harder to stay on track. It also made me feel good to try and help other people feel comfortable and happy and enjoy themselves on the trip. It’s great being a part of a team. Thanks.”

“The trip has given me energy and hope to keep going on trying to do my best.”

“I love seeing how we all helped each other. It feels good to work together as a team. I loved picking up trash along the highway.”

“The trip was very helpful for me. I found out I have a lot of strengths but also have a few areas I need to work on. The teamwork of everyone helped me a lot to stay calm when I felt nervous. I love that everyone is so helpful. When one person in our group got hurt, everyone was patient and helped. We are a great team.”

“The trip helped me relax and feel good. I got to know my peers and staff better and form better friendships. It was so fun to ride the ferry across Lake Powell. It was truly therapeutic. I have not had so much fun in a long time. It was very well planned and the staff was positive and caring. Thank you, Wasatch Mental Health, for the opportunity to go on such a beneficial trip! My life is better at this point than it has been in a very long time thanks to this trip.”

“I was proud to do a service project for the state of Utah even though it was dirty. It made
me feel proud to do something for the state.”
