Provo mental health court provides residents with treatment options
PROVO — Despite popular belief, there are more options for defendants in court than just guilty and not guilty.
In fact, in Provo alone, there are a handful of what are called “problem-solving courts” — court systems set up to provide defendants an opportunity to have court records expunged and charges dropped.
One of those options is mental health court. According to Judge Rick Romney of the Provo Justice Court, mental health court is an opportunity for those who take a plea in abeyance to receive treatment for mental issues and to essentially prove to the courts that after treatment, they are mentally able to function without performing crimes again.
