Master-Level Internships

Wasatch Behavioral Health has a wide variety of options for a fantastic internship experience for advanced graduate interns wanting to be in the mental health or substance use disorder arena. Opportunities include work in family outpatient clinics serving adults, youth, and children; day treatment programs for adults and youth; residential programs for adults and youth; crisis services for adults and youth; specialty services for seriously and persistently mentally ill adults with issues such as homelessness, court ordered care, or vocational development; and a variety of Substance Use Disorder treatment opportunities including assessments, outpatient and residential programs.

A graduate intern will experience the following:
• Provide individual, family and group treatment
• Provide clinical assessments and diagnoses
• Develop individual recovery plans with specific observable and measurable goals
• Maintain collaborative documentation
• Attend staff and team meetings
• Coordinate care with medical providers and partner agencies
• Maintain a 55% face-to-face billable level of service
• Participate in regular supervision
• Will receive an hourly rate of $16.49 an hour.

First-year MSW students will have assignments adjusted to provide generalist work until the student, school, and agency supervisor feel the student is ready for more independent direct care work.

ALL interns must complete Orientation and Training. This is generally a two-day training; much of it is done virtually. A detailed training schedule will be emailed to you several weeks prior to orientation. Your orientation will be scheduled through Human Resources after your interview with Scott Taylor or Amy Buehler. Training classes are held in the Large Training Room at the West Park Building 750 North 200 West, Provo.
Interns should bring:
1) Driver License
2) Social Security Card
3) Your NPI number
4) For Paid Interns – A voided personal check or Direct Deposit Authorization Form from your financial institution.

All new employees/interns must complete:
1) NPI application (info to be emailed with training schedule prior to orientation)
2) Fingerprints at HR office (750 North 200 West, Provo, 3rd floor) as part of our mandatory BCI (Background Criminal Investigation) process.

Below is a list of our programs that may be available for Therapist/MSW internship opportunties:

1st Year – Student interns are put in the schools to help our SSW with behavior management and skills development groups. Usually these groups are in Elementary, Middle, or Junior High schools.

2nd Year – Student interns are placed in the American Fork clinic and can see clients of all ages and all diagnoses. We like to find out the students most preferred population to serve, and then we do our best to give them this type of client.

Westpark Building at WBH

The Westpark Family Clinic internship is a full-time clinical position. A student in WFC will work with a variety of clients and mental health conditions. The population they will serve is primarily adults with some children. A student intern will provide Intakes and assessments, individual therapy, group therapy, and some family therapy. They will be responsible for completing all paper work associated with these responsibilities. In addition, they will be responsible to attend staff meetings. This position is an excellent position to help students get good supervision as they develop quality clinical and therapeutic skills.

Student Intern Therapist at the Provo Family Clinic of Wasatch Behavioral Health: Student intern therapists work under the supervision of a licensed clinician for up to 20 hours per week. They are responsible to maintain a caseload of 15 to 20 clients at a time while being timely in completing all the required paperwork that comes with their caseload . Interns will meet with clients for their initial intake appointments, provide Mental Health Assessments, Diagnoses, and Treatment Plans for each client, and provide regular individual, family, or group treatment as needed. Student interns will meet in supervision each week for about an hour and participate in regular staff meetings/trainings. Advanced standing or 2nd year interns are the best fit for these clinics.

Payson Family Clinic

Student Intern Therapist at the Payson Family Clinic of Wasatch Behavioral Health: Student intern therapists work under the supervision of a licensed clinician for up to 20 hours per week. WCFC

The Wasatch County Family Clinic (WCFC) is located in the beautiful Heber Valley. Interns will enjoy a small rural office environment and provide outpatient therapy to individuals and families with an array of diagnoses, pathologies, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Focuses of treatment include mental health, substance use disorder, and co-occurring diagnoses. The WCFC only provides outpatient services and due to the clinically intensive nature of the position an internship is appropriate for advanced standing students, second year students, or first year students who are interested in advanced learning at a quick pace.

School

Our School Based internship, with Nebo School District, is housed out of our Payson Family Clinic, in Payson Utah. As part of this internship, you will be asked to cover a group of schools somewhere within Nebo School District, usually within one or two cities. The assignment of schools is based on the current need within the school district. Nebo School District includes schools in Springville, Spanish Fork, Mapleton, Elk Ridge, Woodland Hills, Payson, Salem, Goshen, Spring Lake and Santaquin.

For this internship you will be given a case load at your assigned schools. You will meet with children and teens individually at each school. You will also be asked to run various groups in your schools. Groups generally cover topics such as social skills, coping skills or grief.

A school based intern works with our Wasatch Behavioral Health School Based Team, which includes therapists and case managers. You will also be coordinating with school personnel. Such as, teachers, district social workers, school counselors, and school administrators. You will coordinate with your team and your students to create and implement treatment plans, behavioral modifications, and safety plans. You may also be asked to meet with students who are in crisis. Or help give additional support, if your school has an acute traumatic incident. Such as the death of a student or faculty member.

A portion of the students that receive services, through the school based program, are funded by a grant. The school based team (including interns) help collect and enter data, for all the students that are grant funded within the district. They generate a report, which is submitted to their manager, at the end of every school term.

This internship requires the intern to travel between schools during their work day. The intern must have a valid driver’s license, and be able to transport themselves to multiple schools during the day.

Vantage Point

A therapist intern will conduct intakes of youth entering the crisis shelter within 24 hours of the youth arrival. They will also provide individual, group, and family therapy. They will also do treatment and safety planning. They would provide brief therapy (2-21 days) and up to 90 days of aftercare if needed. They will work as a member of a treatment team with a wrap-around model. They will interact with community agencies such as DCFS and JJS. They may also make referrals to these agencies if needed. They can also refer for SUD assessments and services.

Vantage Point is an incredible program and can offer a good glimpse of working with young people at a transformative time in their lives. It is life changing for the youth and can be as well for the intern seeking experience in the field. We are trauma informed center. We are relationship based. Our program teaches youth how to see a choice, want a choice, believe a choice, make a choice, and accept the outcomes. I tell people that I get to play and interact with kids and youth for a living and it is true!

ROC Lobby (2)

This is a youth and family focused mental health treatment team that is comprised of master level clinicians, case manager, respite workers, and a peer support specialist. This multidisciplinary team provides intensive wrap-around supports for high-risk youth and their families. This includes coordinated & enhanced treatment for clients that already have an established treatment team. Additionally this team acts as the youth MCOT team for Utah County.
CYFAST provides individual therapy, case management, group psychoeducation and psychotherapy. Groups offered include a Trauma Based DBT Group, Super Hero’s skills group, TAL programming and a Wellness in-action group. Respite services are also offered to the whole center. There are individual Respite services offered as well as group drop off times offered throughout the week.

Provides a 5 day a week, 12 week long, after school day treatment program for Elementary School age children ages 5 through 12 with mental health needs. Treatment also includes a monthly parent educational group that compliments the day treatment curriculum. Using a trauma focused base, Stride uses positive behavioral strategies to treat our clients. Classrooms are located in Lehi, American Fork, Provo, and Payson. Transportation to and from the program is provided to facilitate attendance.

Monday-Friday. Work with male and female middle school and high school aged youth (typically 12-17). Could also see clients in outpatient. Would work with other therapists to provide trauma-informed therapy to youth with trauma histories. Common issues are: sexual abuse, physical abuse/neglect, adoption issues, sexual acting out behaviors. Would facilitate individual, family, and group therapy. Would prefer a 2nd year.

A residential program for up to 16 girls. An intern at Aspire would work with teenage girls in individual, group, and family therapy. Common issues are trauma, abandonment, neglect, adoption issues, abuse. Common behaviors are self-harm, suicide attempts, running away, verbal aggression, substance abuse, unhealthy/inappropriate relationships. Groups are typically in the afternoons (3-4:30 pm), some flexibility with other times as we are a 24/7 program. Located in Orem.

MCOT

Intern will learn significant crisis mental health assessment and de-escalation skills. Focus on suicide prevention, intervention and post-vention tools. Will interact with several community agencies and local police departments. This is has a significant amount of mobile and in the community experience. Will also learn about involuntary psychiatric commitments (pink, blue and white sheets).

CRS Sign

Intern will interact with clients who come to the receiving center in mental health distress. Work on short term brief therapy to triage, stabilize and refer to ongoing treatment options. This is a diversionary program to the jail and emergency room and intern will see a vast variety of pathologies, diagnoses and social systems. Will work with nurses, front line staff, peer support specialists, case managers and other therapists.

4th district court

This is a 90 day program in the Utah County Jail. Clients are in class/group/individual sessions Monday through Friday. This is a substance use program. Must pass a Utah County Jail background check (including a polygraph) which takes a couple months to go through so an intern would need to apply several months before the internship would start.

Located at the Food and Care Coalition in Provo. The primary focus is homeless and recently incarcerated clients. The intern would do a lot of individual and group therapy. They would do intakes at least one half day per week. Also would potentially do outreach in the community, approaching homeless individuals on the streets and invite to come to our program. Also ACOT model, going to visit clients at their apartments. Mental health and substance use treatment.

Interns here are typically shared between the PREP and Bridge team. We take 1st or 2nd year students. The usual outpatient therapy is provided along with some non-traditional visits provide in the clients home or in the community as needed. You will also help in daily medications drops along with assessments made on client needs and then resolved themselves or refer those needs to the case manager. On the PREP team they will be doing intakes for new clients and providing ongoing therapy for their case load

Youth (14-18)/Young Adult Program (18-26)
With these programs we provide Intensive Outpatient Services (9+ Hours a week), and General Outpatient Services less than 9 hours a week.) Students will learn and participate in the following:
Complete full Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Assessments
Utilize and develop a working knowledge of the ASAM to make recommendations for treatment
Provide Individual Therapy
Provide Group Therapy
Work with a multidisciplinary team to support our clients
Correspond and coordinate with courts, DCFS and other community partners
Exposure to and development of an understanding of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and many other Evidence Based Practices
An understanding of Community Behavioral Health Treatment
Exposure to Fidelity models of therapy ( 7 Challenges in youth, Gender Specific treatment, etc…)

We can take first or second year interns here at South Provo Clinic. The duties would be clinical to the point that the university allows.
Students will be involved in individual therapy, assessments, intakes as needed, groups (both skills based and therapy based) some case management as needed and crisis intervention. They would attend staff meetings and complete all associated paperwork.
The population is all adults, primarily with severely and persistently mentally ill (SPMI population and students will work on a team with 4 others therapists, 13 case managers, prescribers and nurses. It is a very much team approach

foothill residential and detox

A co-ed residential Substance Use Disorder treatment facility that offers residential and detox services for clients. Clients in the residential program are offered a wide array of services that includes: individual therapy, case management, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), medication management, gender specific treatment, and group therapy to address individualized treatment needs. Residential treatment typically runs between 60-90 days depending on individualized treatment needs. Foothill also has a social detox program. Clients that are in the detox program work with a therapist, case manager, and nurse to address their own treatment needs. Clients in detox typically are in the program 3-10 days (dependent on symptoms and intensity of withdrawal symptoms).
Masters level intern will learn how to conduct substance abuse evaluations and provide backup mental health interventions to assist clients with increasing their level of functioning. Administer a substance abuse assessment questionnaire, Perform individual face to face clinical evaluations, Complete screening such as the ASAMS, RANT (The Risk and Needs Triage), and Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI), Provide individual therapy and group therapy to address individualized treatment needs. Collaborate and coordinate with other providers overseeing case management, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), medication management, and gender specific treatment. Assist clients in an effort to increase the client’s level of functioning. Monitor client’s involvement with negotiated interventions and substance use treatment. Monitor clinical progress weekly and report to treatment team Write or draft correspondence, reports, documents, and/or other written materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are a limited number of master-level paid internship positions, however, there are no undergraduate (bachelor-level) paid internship positions.

Interns will work alongside clinical staff and clients to assist in a variety of manners such as case management, psychoeducational individual and group treatment, and behavior management. See above for more information specifically relating to your kind of internship.

The internship program is flexible to students’ needs as we understand the workload of being a college student. Interns usually have an hour requirement provided by their school. Interns should work with their Wasatch Behavioral Health supervisor to coordinate their schedules.
